Cologne 14-17 October

On Sunday morning we visited Cologne Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in Europe. Construction commenced in 1248 and completed in 1880 (just took a little while),

The windows and interior were stunning.

Nearby the Cathedral is Museum Ludwig. We spent about two & a half hrs there and only saw about half.

The museum houses a large collection of works, including works by Dali, Leichenstein, and Picasso (one of the largest in Europe).

View of city from Museum window.

After the Museum we found a nice little place below the Mondial Dom Hotel where we enjoyed an early dinner of potato fritters (rosti) with horseradish, smoked salmon & apple. Perfect for a jetlagged couple.

On Monday we decided on the Hop On Hop Off bus which we both agreed was one of the most boring we've experienced.

We then walked quite a few Kms getting lost in the backstreets of Cologne.

Dinner was at an Italian restaurant about two mins walk from our hotel (we're not sure why but every second restaurant seemed to be Italian).  Food was delish and the waiter, from Kyrgyzstan, was a delight and we hit it off fabulously, making the evening extra enjoyable.

Overall, while Cologne was probably the perfect place to recover from jetlag, we wouldn't recommend it.

We caught an afternoon plane from Cologne/Bonn Airport to Athens with Eurowings. Although flight was delayed, we arrived 20 mins early! Excellent flight.

Next instalment will be Athens, We're loving Athens, by the way.

Comments

  1. Nice pix. Didn't the Brits bomb Cologne Cathedral? So a lot of it is reconstructed. The art is wonderful. I do not think I realized that Picasso did that sort of Kandinsky thing.

  2. They did bomb it but only a small section. I was wondering where that Kandinsky got to!

  3. Finally I can comment! Your Athens visit took me back to 1979! Loved it, especially the age and history. My island for that trip was Paros - rarely visited at the time but popular now. I'm enjoying "travelling" with you two.
